Analysis

At the beginning of the title sequence the first titles that appear are the conglomerates which produced the film and therefore they are the most important credits to the film, hence why they are first to be credited. After this an instrumental begins which is non-digetic sound, this is quite slow and peaceful, suggesting the story-line of the film is lighthearted. An image of a feather in the sky falling also appears at the same time. A tracking shot is used to follow the feather and this is also used to take the audience on a journey and show them where the film is set, known as an establishing shot. The feather travels down to a small town and continues to get blown around past buildings, then a man who is wearing a suit and holding a briefcase and then past cars and finally to a boy sitting on a bench (Forrest Gump). This could imply that because he is the last to be shown he isn't very important within his community and isn't very cared about by others. Also because he is sitting alone on a bench whereas the other people shown are walking or driving somewhere and are surrounded by other people suggests he is isolated from the community. The feather finally stops falling and rests against one of Forrest's shoes. Because he doesn't immediately pick it up off of his shoe gives focus to the shoes he is wearing making them seem significant. He is wearing very muddy trainers however the laces are clean, this makes the audience think that these shoes have a particular importance to him and instead of buying a new pair he just uses new laces. His stripy multicolored socks indicates he is young and this is also reiterated when the camera continues to track the feather as he picks it up and we see his small case as when he opens it it is packed with clothes and toothpaste as if he is about to go away from home. Tom Hanks' name is the first actor to be credited even before the film title, this is because he is the main star in the film and widely known around the world.
